What you will gain from the workshops

Build a solid foundation for musculoskeletal anatomy of the major muscle groups, joints, and bones

Understand some of those abstract terms like “tuck your tailbone” and “engage your thigh muscles”

Learn to speak the language of anatomy to build confidence in communicating about the body to other practitioners, teachers, students or health care professionals

Learn to work with yoga asana to correct common postural habits that cause discomfort for a majority of the western world

Understand the complicated joints such as the knee, SI joint and the shoulder joint

Explore how muscles work together to create alignment and how this knowledge will help you to create effective sequences to enhance your personal asana practice and/or classes you teach

Learn to work intelligently to avoid injury and be able to modify poses for pre-existing injury in yourself and/or students you work with

Learn the subtle anatomy of chakras, nadis and ayurvedic doshas

Learn to design more effective sequences of yoga asana for home practice or classes

Go home with several sequences (including the one we do in the workshop) to practice on your own or share with your classes

1. “Back to basics yoga and anatomy of movement”

Gain an in-depth understanding of the major muscle groups and joints
Look at how these structures work together with yoga asana to create movement, balance and alignment

Explore the anatomy of movement and be able to to design yoga sequences for their home practice or classes that strengthens, increases flexibility and helps to align the body

Increase your anatomical vocabular

2. “BACK to basics yoga and anatomy of the spine and thorax”

• Anatomy of the spine and associated muscles and joints
• Anatomy of the ribs, sternum and clavicle and associate muscles and joints
• What are the “abs”, how many are there
• What are the “erectors”
• Sequencing an asana class that targets the spine and thorax
• Muscle groups working together
• Movement of the spine and thorax and yoga asana to target these areas
• How to prevent injury and modify poses for pre-existing injuries

3. “BACK to basics yoga and anatomy of the pelvis and thigh”

• Anatomy of the pelvis and femur and associated muscles and joints
• What are the “quadriceps”
• What are the “hamstrings”
• What are the “glutes”
• What are the “adductors and abductors”
•What is a “tail bone”
• Movement of the pelvis and thigh and yoga asana to target these areas
• Yoga asana to create stability around the SI and hip joints
• How to prevent injury and modify poses for pre-existing injuries

 

4. “Back to basics yoga and anatomy of the shoulder”

• Anatomy of the shoulder and associated muscles and joints
• What is the “rotator cuff”
• What are the “pects”, how many are there
• Sequencing an asana class to target this area of the body
• Yoga asana to create stability around the shoulder joint
• How to prevent injury and modify poses for pre-existing injuries

5. “BACK to basics yoga, chakras and the endocrine system part one”

• Explore chakras one and two, how these energy centers effect the body, mind and soul
• Learn the associated endocrine glands (adrenals and reproductive glands)
• Bija mantras (chant) to tone and balance chakras
• Pranayama (control of breath) to tone and balance chakras
• Meditation (still the mind, bring into balance) to look deeply into our own energy centers
• Yoga asana to bring balance to these energy centers

6. “BACK to basics yoga, chakras and the endocrine system part two”

• Explore chakras three, four and five and how these energy centers effect the body, mind and soul
• Learn the associated endocrine glands (pancreas, thymus, thyroid and heart )
• Bija mantras (chant) to tone and balance chakras
• Pranayama (control of breath) to tone and balance chakras
• Meditation (still the mind, bring into balance) to look deeply into our own energy centers
• Yoga asana to bring balance to these energy centers

7. “BACK to basics yoga, chakras and the endocrine system part three”

• Explore chakras six and seven and how these energy centers effect body, mind and soul
• Learn the associated endocrine glands (pituitary and pineal gland)
• Bija mantras (chant) to tone and balance chakras
• Pranayama (control of breath) to tone and balance chakras
• Meditation (still the mind, bring into balance) to look deeply into our own energy centers
• Yoga asana to bring balance to these energy centers
